Newt Gingrich – Tea Party Patriot?

Newt Gingrich has been catching a lot of flak lately from conservative groups and individuals for his recent endorsement of Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava. In retrospect, it seems that rather than ridiculing his actions, we should be celebrating what he has done for his country. When Republicans and conservatives across the country were moving their support to Doug Hoffman, the unknown third-party candidate, Newt stuck with Dede.

For those who may not know, Dede Scozzafava is a liberal Republican who supports abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and bank bailouts, and has some concerning ties with ACORN (read also here and here) . Newt could not possibly be so foolish as to support the likes of Dede Scozzafava, could he?

Perhaps Newt saw this as an opportunity to draw the attention of the nation to the stage of the 23rd New York congressional district in this special election. Maybe he knew that a life-long conservative Republican endorsing a liberal politician would bring this race into the national spotlight. Maybe, just maybe, Newt knew the political ramifications of this decision, yet was still willing to commit political suicide as a Tea Party martyr in order to bring hope to a nation.

Probably not. But regardless of his intentions, Gingrich did us all a great service. Had he not so adamantly supported Dede Scozzafava, the country may have been kept largely in the dark about the NY-23 race. The race has become a proving ground for conservatives. Although this is only a single congressional election, the impact that it has on the 2010 elections is enormous. Americans are seeing that they are no longer forced to vote simply for the lesser of two evils. A common person of principles like Doug Hoffman now has the opportunity not only to run, but to win.
