This is a question I am asked probably as much as any other by critics. This is also the primary defense of those who favor bigger government, higher taxes and less personal responsibility.
Today I will answer this question. And though I will not attempt to speak for anyone else, thousands of Americans would no doubt hang their head in agreement.
Where was I for the past eight years? I was sleeping–coasting through life realizing that our country was headed on a downward spiral, but not conscious enough to understand the full effects of the direction. I have never tried to defend the unconstitutional and illegal activities of past administrations, but when we are oblivious, we really do not understand what is going on around us.
So what was the final wakeup call? First let me say what it was not. It was not the fact that we have a president whose skin color is something other than white, as many are alleging. The cry of “racism” is just another substitute for a defense of what is going on with our federal government.
Months before the 2008 presidential election when I began to hear the absolute anti-American teaching to which Barack Hussein Obama willingly subjected himself for so many years, I felt a nudge. When on his campaign trail, Obama bragged about his goal to “fundamentally transform” our great country, my eyes began to open. Perhaps the nearly two trillion of our hard-earned taxpayer dollars spent in the government takeover of private companies has served as a final wakeup call. These bailouts, of course, date back to the previous Bush administration. Now, news does not simply go in one ear and out the other as it has in years past.
Whether it’s anti-American “czars” being hired into the administration, federally funded groups like ACORN receiving tens of millions of tax dollars to fund campaigns and assist tax evasion and other illegal activities, elementary public schools praising Obama and singing his campaign slogans, a hate crimes bill limiting the freedom of speech being tacked on to a defense bill, the federal government attempting to regulate and mandate the information on the radio waves and the internet, the president vowing to pass a government-controlled health care bill against the will of the people or the White House waging war on news organizations, I now take notice.
I’ll be the first to admit that I am a deep sleeper. When we were kids, my friends and I would wake one another up by dumping water on each other’s faces. Americans have had water dumped on us for the past year, and if we don’t wake up now, we never will.
So if you want to use the U.S. Constitution to tell me where I am wrong, please feel free. But do not defend the calculated effort for a socialist government takeover in this country by asking where I have been for the past eight years. That is not a defense. Besides, I am ashamed to admit that I was asleep.
To those who through all of this still remain asleep at the wheel…What will it take for you to finally wake up?

I was going before the sheerer like sheep. I was severely sheer and followed in compliance as one without a soul. Then the sheer made a huge mistake he committed adultery. He showed himself to be the same as the thief that does for himself and cares nothing for the sheep. Now a mighty giant and voice they don’t want to hear. That is why Mr. had better watch out because with my vigor and the power of God Paul Curtman will be my congressman in Jefferson City.
Based on some of the debates I’ve had on facebook, some will never wake up even as their head sinks below the waterline as the ship sinks.
Speaking of sinking below the water line, get a copy of the National Geographic film on DVD called “Six Degrees Could Change the World.” Hawaii’s beaches are disappearing, ,,,,, oh, never mind. I know you guys don’t “believe” scientists.
My wake up was the out of control spending and wars waged by bush, I seem to remember his campaign in 2000 having something to do with a more humble foreign policy and small government, fiscal responsibility and all that. Clinton burned me on Democrats, Bush burned me on Republicans, so now I’m just a Patriot. Oh, to answer the guy about the AGW scam, I don’t listen to government funded scientists because they’re lying about AGW go read the Emails.
Nice article, I agree totally. Wish there were a very short answer. My wake up call was Katrina. Not the govt. response but the demand of the people for the govt to take responsibility for every aspect of their lives. Then George Bush did respond with billions of dollars and then billions more. As for our beaches disappearing Jason. Maybe one of your scientist should tell you that water erodes. Ever see the Grand Canyon. I can hear the native Indians a thousand years ago. “Hey that river is digging a ditch on our land, the govt. ought to do something.” If you do not want to lose your beach, then build a retaining wall like the ones we have to build in our yards to stop erosion.
