New Haven resident Jerry Breihan began his eight-week course on the book, The 5000 Year Leap, on Monday evening, March 22, at Memorial Baptist Church in New Haven. The book’s author, W. Cleon Skousen (1913-2006), got the idea for it when he was an undergraduate at George Washington University’s School of Law. One of his professors had said that the U.S. Constitution was obsolete and not designed for a modern industrial society.
Skousen asked his professors for a book highlighting the principles of the founding fathers and discovered that one did not exist. So he began studying the letters, biographies and speeches of the founding fathers and set to work providing the book that he had been looking for.
Breihan’s purpose in giving the class is to make people aware of the political world we live in. He wants people to appreciate the relevance of the Constitution to today’s world. He teaches that the Constitution was intended to limit the government, and not to control the people.
Monday night’s presentation was an introduction to the course. The remaining seven courses will expound on the 28 principles covered in the book. Anyone wanting to join the course should show up at the church at 6:30 p.m. on any of the next seven Monday evenings. The sessions go until 8:00 p.m.
