Yesterday, Senator Chuck Purgason introduced the Missouri Jobs and Prosperity Act to the Missouri Senate. If approved, this legislation would give Missourians the ability to vote to effectively end all state income taxes by 2018. The gradual phaseout would begin on January 1, 2013. All taxes on income would be replaced with a sale and use tax. Read the full text of the bill.
Purgason is one of nine candidates who have filed for the Republican nomination in the United States Senate.

A ‘yes’ vote will amend the Constitution of the State of Missouri to
7 eliminate individual and corporate income tax, and state sales and use tax and
8 to enact a single, revenue-neutral sales tax of five and eleven one-hundredths
9 percent on new purchases of goods and services, and to exempt property
10 purchased for business or investment from the sales tax, and to provide each
11 qualified family with a sales tax rebate to ensure no state sales tax is paid on
12 purchases up to the federal poverty level.
And how are they going to rebate my sales tax if I’m poor? I’m guessing that the state will have to promulgate rules and regulations to track everyone’s purchases. Uh, no thanks! Not to mention that “property purchased for business use” will not be subject to sales tax. The way this lay man interprets this is that Big business will get a pass on real estate and vehicles that average joes won’t, while having to pay 5.11% more for everything while having the state effectively spy on every single purchase we make at retail businesses. In this form my vote will be a resounding NO!
